Instructions
There are 3 apps that come together to create the Revit to AR pipeline: the Revit exporter, the website, and the iOS app.
Revit Exporter
The Revit exporter exports visible model elements from a 3D view in .glb format. After installing the panel will be visible in the 'Add-ins' tab.
- Download and install the latest release of the Revit exporter for the appropriate Revit version.
- In Revit, create a dedicated 3D view that includes whatever you want to see in AR. The view must include one AR_QR_Code.rfa Revit family. Position this image target family exactly where you want your QR code to be on site. Use the horizontal or vertical type depending on where you want your QR code located on site.
The exporter will map materials in different ways depending on the visual style
of the view. Textures and Realistic setting will export textures used in the appearance tab in the material editor. Consistent colors and shaded view setting will color materials as the shading color specified under the graphics tab of the material editor. Views set to hidden line will export all model elements as Gray.
In order for the Revit exporter to be able to find the textures that are applied to your materials, you need to have the textures saved in the 'Custom Textures' folder. Press the 'Custom Textures' button under Full Scale AR in the Add-ins tab to open this folder.
Revit materials have many different schemas and some features are not supported by the exporter. The exporter works best with the generic material schema. To create a generic material simply create a new material.
- Once your view is ready select 'Export to .glb' to save the .glb to your downloads folder.
Website
- Create a profile and sign in.
- Create a Space and give your Space a name.
- Upload the .glb model that was created with the Revit exporter.
- Download the QR code and print it out at 100% scale on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. It is very important that the QR code ends up being the right size. Make sure that your printer will print it out at 100% scale.
On Site
- Affix the QR code to your site in exactly the correct position in the X, Y and Z planes as well as rotation about the vertical axis. Precise QR code positioning is required because your entire Revit model is going to position itself relative to this QR code.
iOS App
- Open the app and point the camera at the QR code. The model should download. You will need to point the camera at the QR code again in order for the model to position itself.
- You will now see the image target Revit family pop into view over your QR code. You can then examine the model in your space.
- Move around and view your model from as many angles as possible and screen record while doing so that you can view your video later.
Note: If you want to make a change to your model simply re-export a new .glb model from Revit and upload it to the space on the website. You do not need to print a new QR code.
